2020

Year ten- in the books!

It is has been an… unusual year as a teacher. My tenth year of teaching is finished.

It seems like a historic time to be in education. This year, I had a student-teacher for the first time. I enjoyed having her in my class and the process of mentoring a person new to the field. Since the quarantine in mid-March, I have discovered what I can offer as a teacher in distance learning. My goal was to firstly, offer support to my students with their personal wellness. Then I wanted to offer support for their other academic classes and advocate for my students should teachers unknowingly make unreasonable assignments. Lastly, I wanted to offer predictable and accessible practices to my students’ literacy and English development. I started to use Instagram to interact with kids from school and that was my biggest success.

I will be anxious to see what learning will look like in the autumn. I found distance learning super boring. I didn’t like it at all because I didn’t get to do what I like best about teaching. I love building an understanding and relationship with kids and using that understanding to respond in the moment to accelerate their learning and seeing the next step and pointing them towards it. Bottom line: not being with students is a real drag. I’m grateful for my job, my setting, my colleagues, and most of all my students.
